This spring has been exciting! Full of new experiences and opportunities. I have been working on my new house, getting it cleaned up, freshly painted, and rehabing the hardwoods that were buried under stinky old carpet Every new project completed feels like a huge accomplishment, a new creation. In the mode of creating new things- Getting ready to build raised planting beds for a veggie garden, anticipating the growth of healthy vegetables from a tiny seed!

Private sessions with Michelle have been eye opening. Working to become a yoga therapist has me working through some deeper issues in my past and present. Pulling up some old crud that has surfaced in the last year and a half. I have been learning the value of self preservation and moving away from things that are unhealthy. These patterns we get in to. I’m feeling a bit lighter these days hoping to carry that feeling over in to all parts of my life. Starting to work on my physical body is also another thing on the list.

A few lessons learned (and still learning):

Acceptance of things, Just as they are

Things that happen to us are just lessons that we need to learn; Mine is to become whole

LET IT GO; accept the good and move away from the bad.

Let yourself love…

2010 has already been a year of transformation. I have had lot’s of new experiences as a massage therapist and instructor, and have learned some lessons of value. The main one being flexibility It seems that when I get too comfortable or secure in my abilities the universe shakes things up. Don’t get me wrong, I love change and movement but it gets stressful when it all happens at once.
I got transferred to a new school that recently got bought out by ATI. It was a small mom and pop school and the employees are still getting use to the corporate ways of career training schools. I hope all goes well with this experience. I’ve also been working at the Stoneleigh Hotel, and I love it! This place so so calming and beautiful and I am so blessed to have this new opportunity. I was really missing the spa scene, so I feel great about this change. I am also continuing my yoga journey at Priya, doing the 500 hour instructors course and loving it.
I can’t wait to teach yoga and get in to all that wonderful stuff.
I’ve also been perfecting my Swedish Massage. I’ve decided to start researching the swedish system because I have noticed inconsistencies here and there. This book says one thing, while another says something different. SO it’s time to discover the pure swedish style. Wish me luck! LOL!

My hubby and I spent our one year anniversary in Austin and decided to get a massage at the resort that we stayed in. I wish I had found someone who worked independently (had their own practice) instead of using the hotel spa. It was really disappointing. I don’t mean to be writing bad reviews all the time but I have no choice on this matter.

Why do some therapists think that it’s a good idea to use their bodies inappropriately while giving a massage??? Please stop sitting on the table. It’s not professional and makes your client feel strange when you sit next to their head and drape their arm over your leg to massage their arm. Very bizarre. Also check on the draping, draping was what made this massage so bad. I felt like my whole butt was out and exposed. Also, if you are planning to stretch your clients arms up above their head, make sure you have enough drape to cover their chest. I could go on and on. I’m not impressed by the fancy strokes- it’s BS. I felt like this therapist was entertaining himself during the session, instead of focusing on my intent-Which he of course, never asked for. I need a good massage!

What exactly is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese style of body work that is used to promoted healing and reduce stress. Reiki is considered a form of spiritual healing, yet it has nothing to do with religion. Neither the giver nor the receiver is required to believe in any higher power to use this technique.

What can I expect from a treatment?

Reiki is performed usually on a massage table, with the client completely clothed. The Giver or therapist will ask the client for their intention of the reiki session . The therapist will then use several hand placements on or above the clients body to allow the reiki energy to transfer to the blocked or stagnant areas. The treatment usually last about 60 minuets ( one hour).

What does a Reiki treatment feel like?

Reiki can provide deep relaxation, calmness, feelings of peace, and can feel like warm, flowing energy all around your body. Reiki works on all layers of the body. It treats the whole self including the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects.

Hillary Arrieta is a level II reiki practioner in the Dallas, Tx. Area

Is said to be like no other… Sheer Bliss-

The Shirodhara is a Ayurvedic treatment , part of a holistic healing science from India that aims to heal the body, mind, and soul. This form of health care has been practiced for over 5000 years! During the treatment, The client lies on a massage table and a slow flowing, continuous stream of warm oil is applied, by an oil fountain, to the forehead and more specifically the third eye chakra. It is said to be the chakra of human consciousness . The treatment takes place in a comfortable and tranquil environment with soft lighting and relaxing music. A typical treatment could last between 30 to 75 min & benefits of the Shirodhara include: nourishment of the hair and scalp enhancement of blood circulation to the brain, mental clarity, & heightened state of awareness and peace

I have been very intrigued by the shirodhara, all ayurvedic treatments for that matter, for some time and thought it would be a great treatment to offer my clients. I had never actually experienced it myself so I checked out the web for a affordable place in Dallas that offered it. I found a place in the North Dallas area ( who will remain nameless) and booked an appointment for this morning, at 9 AM. Being excited and also naturally early for everything, I showed up around 8:30- Sat in my car till 9 and then made my way in to the yoga studio/ massage center. Everyone seemed very friendly, wondering why I was there- was I joining the yoga class? Had I been helped?? Was I waiting for someone????? Sheesh! ( These were the yoga students making the inquiries, not anyone that actually worked there.) I felt like I was on trial or something. So I waited and waited, my therapist showed up late- I was unimpressed, to say the least. The whole treatment was lacking in so many ways. The AMAZING head massage I was anticipating at the end of the oil treatment was completely absent and the room was anything but relaxing. The whole place felt old and cluttered and the room was quite chilly. I am choosing not to name this place because I don’t want to be rude, and as my students would say “Put them on Blast” on the Internet, but I would not recommend this place to anyone, at least not for the shirodhara treatment. Maybe the yoga is good… who knows- I won’t be revisiting, even though my hair is very soft and shiny today

This experience, even though it wasn’t a great one, has inspired me to learn more about the treatment and perform it 100X better for my clients in the future! Hope everyone is having a relaxing Saturday! I just got on twitter.com- look me up if you are on there too massageindallas is my screen name on there.

Yesterday I learned that there are many variations of Thai massage- I have been studying traditional style for the past few months , I love it and I know it is extremely healing. I have only experienced Thai massage from my instructor so I decided to go out and find a practitioner in town. I got to experience the healing aspect of Thai first hand yesterday morning with Sacred Art Thai massage, here in Dallas. Sacred art is anything but traditional! The practitioner describes himself as an alternative healer and his style was very different than anything I had studied in the past. As I was receiving the work, I thought to myself- There’s no comparison to my “traditional” style and his style- It’s like comparing apples and oranges! It was beautiful all the same and I really enjoyed it. He used energy work and sound therapy as well as physical manipulation to create this unique bodywork. I would totally recommend it to anyone who was feeling bound and tight. I felt very loose and relaxed after the hour and a half massage! For $95, it was pretty awesome!

This was the first massage I have ever paid for, believe it or not. It was fun being the “client” for a change- I usually trade massage with co-workers or get them from the intern students at the school and it’s just not the same! This lead me to the idea of making an attempt, every month to seek out a massage therapist that specializes in a different style of massage-and of course write about it- I am also wanting to do that with yoga studios in Dallas as well. I’m not sure if my pocketbook can do it, but I’m going to try.

Obama’s health care reform is all over the news. You can’t turn on the TV or radio with out hearing some thing about it. There are many skeptics out there worrying about the quality of government health care….which is a valid concern!

This is a huge change for America! It is also a great time to discuss what we can do to maintain our health. Massage therapy falls in to the preventative health care category & is one of the oldest healing practices ever used. According to massagetherapy.com, Massage can:

Alleviate low-back pain and improve range of motion.

Assist with shorter, easier labor for expectant mothers and shorten maternity hospital stays.

Ease medication dependence.

Enhance immunity by stimulating lymph flow—the body’s natural defense system.

Exercise and stretch weak, tight, or atrophied muscles.

Help athletes of any level prepare for, and recover from, strenuous workouts.

Improve the condition of the body’s largest organ—the skin.

Increase joint flexibility.

Lessen depression and anxiety.

Promote tissue regeneration, reducing scar tissue and stretch marks.

Pump oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs, improving circulation.

Reduce postsurgery adhesions and swelling.

Reduce spasms and cramping.

Relax and soften injured, tired, and overused muscles.

Release endorphins—amino acids that work as the body’s natural painkiller.

Relieve migraine pain.

And this is just the tip of the ice burg!

Hippocrates, the father of western medicine was an advocate of massage. Many people believe that he change the face of health care and paved the way for medical research. Hippocrates states”‘The physician must be experienced in many things,’ but assuredly also in rubbing; For rubbing can bind a joint that is too loose and loosen a joint that is too rigid … Rubbing can bind and loosen; can make flesh [here Hippocrates believes that massage can help build muscle tissue] and cause parts to waste.’”- From the article, Pages from History by Robert Noah Calvert.

Massage therapy has been tested through out time and research shows that it can keep you healthy, so take some time out and go get a massage. Invest in your health, invest in your future!
